The NCP offers visitors excellent opportunities for wild life viewing and bird watching. Sites include Minneriya, Kaudullawewa, Maduru Oya and sections of Wilpattu and Wasgamuwa national parks, Medirigiriya and Galnewa-Mulannatuwa bird sanctuaries, Talawa, Kekirawa, Galnewa and Minneriya-Habarana nature reserves and Anuradhapura, Mihintale and Padaviya sanctuaries.

Among animals to be seen here are elephant, leopard, sloth bear, deer, monkey, wild boar, porcupine, ant-eater and many others. The more than one hundred species of birds to be spotted at NCP sites include forest and aquatic birds of the dry zone, among them parakeet, bee-eater, shrike, flycatcher, bittern, drongo, woodpecker, owl, hawk, eagle, barber, warbler, sun-bird, bulbul, heron, egret, kingfisher, snipe, lapwing, pelican, duck,water-hen and numerous others. Apart from bird sanctuaries, these species also frequent irrigation lakes, archaeological reserves and jungles.
