Traditional life-style

As the birth-place of Sri Lankan culture, the NCP is a sanctuary of age-old traditions, customs, arts, crafts, wisdom, folk-lore and life-styles. Its predominantly agrarian society while keeping step with essential modern development and progress, has cherished and preserved its deep-rooted cultural heritage Thus modern tractors as well as age-old buffalo-drawn plough are used in farming and irrigation often comes from ancient reservoirs and channels. Traditional crafts such as pottery, basket and mat-weaving and wood, metal and stone carving are practiced in rural communities. Ancient arts such as folk dancing, music, theatre and ancient sciences such as ayurvedic herbal therapy and insight meditation are other fascinating facets of traditional life-style in the NCP.

Most towns in north central province have developed as capital city - Colombo, but rural villagers prefer to live with their nature. Most of these villagers construct their houses nature frendly. Their requirments are limited. Medical facilities, suitable educational facilities and other requirments obtained from nerest town area.

Anuradhapura

Sri Lankas premier ancient city Anuradhapura, is the first Sinhalese capital of Sri Lanka. The awsome Ruwanweliseya, Abhayagiriys, Jethawanaramaya, and Thuparamaya Dagabas are still venerated by Bhuddhists and these massive works along the large weavas (Lakes) reveal the past glory of the city. The Sacred Bo Tree (Sri Maha Bodhi) - considered the world's oldest recorded surviving tree; The seated samadhi statue of the meditating buddha; Kutta Pokuna (Twin Ponds); Manu temples and Isurumuniya are some of the attractions in Anuradhapura. There is an abundance of evidence of ancient architecture dating to the third century B.C. and earlier.

Polonnaruwa

The medieval capital of Sri Lanka, rose to frameafter the decline of Anuradhapura. The largest man made reservoir, the Parakrama Samudraya, was built during King Parakrama's reign and it is larger than the Colombo harbour. The ruins of Shiva Devalas and Hindu culture on SinhalaBuddhist culture. In the complex of Gal Vihare, there sre imposing Buddha sculptures in granite. This is one of the most evocative piece of sculpture in the world. Unique style of brick work architecture is also seen at Lankathilake Viharaya. The other interesting places are the ruins of the King's Council Chamber, the Royal Pavillion, Kiri Vehera, and Gal viharaya. All these places show the height of stone craft and artistry of this period.
