Ayurveda is a word in Sanskrit Language. The literal meaning of the word is knowledge about life, derived from "Ayur (Life) + Veda (Knowledge)". Ancient Indian literature sources contain references to this subject, which describes the complete anatomy of human life and its associated static and dynamic behavior. The one important aspect is about maintaining the ideal metabolic balance in our physical body for a healthy life. The methods inherited from these sources applied for treatment are unique and are useful for all the people.

A great indian saint known as "LORD DHANVANTARI" made the formal methodologies for various treatments using herbs. He is also known as the Father of Ayurveda. All the principles of treatment have been derived from the rules as quoted by "LORD DHANVANTARI" in the form of "Slokas"(A Sanskrit word, synonymous to 'Stanza' in English) found in various sanskrit books on this subject.

As per Ayurveda, the body organism depends upon the balance of 3 main elements in our body.
"Kapha" The WATER element
"Pitta" The FIRE element
"Vayu" The AIR element

| The qualitative and quantitative measure of these elements determines health and disease. If there is a desired balance of these elements in the body, the body functions in a normal way with proper functioning of digestive system, nervous system, excretory system etc. Any imbalance caused in these elements, indicate improper functioning and hence disease as per the nature of imbalance. |

The history of Ayurveda and ayurvedic practice
Buddhism influenced the advent of Ayurveda in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC. The ancient Kings of Sri Lanka contributed to the development of Ayurveda. e.g. King Pandukabaya set up ayurveda hospitals in Ritigala.

King Buddhadasa was an eminent ayurvedic physician himself and was famed for treating soldiers, horses and elephants. King Kasyappa constructed ayurveda hospitals in Anuradhapura. King Parakramabahu constructed irrigation works and the Royal Hospital. Even to day the ruins of ayurveda hospitals and medicinal troughs (9th century BC) known as 'Beheth Oruwa' can be seen Mihintale.
Ayurveda tries to balance the three vital body functions 'vata' (air). 'Pitta' (bile) and 'Kapha' (phlegm) as well as the harmony between body and soul. Ayurveda is a complete healing system. It therefore promotes general well being as well as curing illnesses.

It is not only cures disease but rejuvenates the body by increasing immunity against disease producing organisms.
Ayurveda in recent times has proved to be very effective in curbing present day stress and
in promoting a positive mental attitude and relaxation of the mind.
